“HARDKNOCKS”TM
The NFL is effectively making an effort to improve the safety of their players and the technology of the helmets. Roger Goodell commissioner of the National Football League realizes that a way to solve the safety of players is too start teaching kids about the right fundamentals (Goodell 1). A concussion is temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. Also, loosely, after effects such as confusion or temporary incapacity. The word “concussion” can scare any athlete no matter the sport, it could mean sitting on the bench for a few weeks then having to pass tests. Kids and adults are receiving these concussions from hits and falls. How can the NFL change this or decrease the amount of concussions in the league. One way they are trying to change the game is making a new kickoff rule, which was introduced in the 2011- 2012 season, the rule is that the kickoff is at the 35 yard line instead of the 30 because they want more touchbacks in the end zone. Jesse David in an interview with The Associated Press spoke about the rule and said that concussions are happening in other aspects of the game but it’s a start to trying to resolve this problem. Another way that Mr. Goodell and the league are solving the problem is too make helmets better. NO helmet can prevent a concussion but some of the new helmets are the Revolution Speed from Riddell and DNA from Schutt Sports, a study showed that players wearing the Speed and the DNA was a 5.3 percent annual concussion rate while there was a 7.6 percent rate with standard helmets. The NFL is doing more things every year to keep the players safe.
It was intersting to learn what kind of changes the NFL made to decrease the amount of concussions such as the kickoff being at the 35 yard line instead of the 30.
